SMOKING

At a December meeting of the Wanganui Hospitai Board, the subject /of banning cigarettes and pipe smoking in all board hospitals was discussed. Although most board members were in agreement with a total ban, previous attempts had proved unsuccessful. However, it was felt that

there are health risks associated with smoking and discomfort caused to non-smokers. As a result all hospitals in the board's area, including Waiouru and Waimarino, now have severely restricted smoking areas for patients. Furthermore, visitors are not permitted to smoke in any area and hospitai staff are not permitted to smoke in public areas.
