LOCAL BOY DROWNS

An 1 1 year-old Waiouru boy, James Mathew Weir, formerly of Ohakune, drowned in Lake Taupo last Wednesday, January 1 1. Mathew, the son of Simon Weir, Ohakune Junction and Mrs Peggy Pedley, Waiouru, was

swimming at Bully Point Lake Taupo with his sister Shelley 1 5, and his stepfather Colin Pedley, owrier of the Waiouru stationery and bookshop. The three swimmers got into difficulties just after 5pm in choppy waters. Mr Pedley managed to get Shelley onto the rocks but

despite struggling in the water for almost an hour to save Mathew, the boy's body was swept away. Turangi police praised Mr Pedley's efforts in attempting to save Mathew in treacherous conditions. They said Mr Pedley put his own life in danger in his rescue attempts.
