Police warn motorists about unlocked cars
The police are concerned about the number of motorists who are leaving their cars unlocked, some with valuables inside and clearly visible. The problem is particularly bad at this time of year, said Ohakune's constable Marty - Sutherland last week after he had investigated several complaints. The problem arises at this time of year, he said, because there are a number of end-of-year functions attended by large numbers of people who park their cars close together near the venue. This is a big temptation for those so inclined to gain entry into unlocked cars in the hope of some rich and easy pickings. The densely-packed cars
provide good cover for those attempting to break into them particularly after dark when most of these offences occur, he said. Investigating one report of suspicious activity near the Ohakune Primary School during a public function last week, constable Sutherland found, of the 50 or so cars that were parked there, 14 were unlocked and some of these had sheepskin rugs and other valuables clearly visible and easy to get at. But it's not only private motorists who should lock their vehicles ... so should car dealers. In another incident two young persons were arrested last week attempting to hot wire and start a number of unlocked vehicles in a local car saies yard.
