POLICE AWARDS

Senior Constable Brian Foote of Waiouru received his long-service and goodconduct medals from New Zealand's Police Commissioner Keith Thompson at a ceremony in Wanganui last Wednesday. At the ceremony, police Commissioner Thompson called for public cooperation in preventing thefts and pointed out that more than $2 million worth of property had been stolen in the Wanganui police district during the first nine months of this year. Despite the recovery of $847,000 worth of goods (41% which, in terms of the national average, is a good effort) it was placing an undue burden on the police. The public could do a lot to help by securing their cars and properties and reporting any suspicious activity. "An ounce of prevention is better than a ton of cure" he said.
