Cadet selected

From 150 enquiries recorded by the NZ Army recruiting office in Wanganui and 49 applications received, a Ruapehu College 6th Former was one of only nine candidates finally selected as a Regular Force cadet for the 1984 intake. He is James Whitworth, 17, whose home is in Waiouru and whose most recent 'public appearance' was as Sir Joseph Ward, Prime Minister of New Zealand, at the re-enactment

of the North Island Main Trunk Line spike-driving ceremony last month. James was one of 24 applicants for the Regular Force cadets who passed the rigourous medical tests but only nine of these were accepted for training by the national selection board. He will undertake a trade course in carpentry whilst undergoing training with the Regular Force cadets next year.
