Tax to be levied on runner's win?
Raetihi's ultra distance runner, Siegfried Bauer, who recently won the 1 ,000 mile Cliff Young Colac race in Australia collected a $2000 cheque for his win plus about another $1000 in last-minute donations and sponsorships. But he may not be allowed to keep all of his well-earned winnings — the Australian Tax Department requires than one-third of the prize money be paid over to them. However, organisers of the Colac 1000 mile.race are protesting angrily about this
possibility and have vowed that neither he nor any of the other four runners (Tony Rafferty, Cliff Young, Joe Record and John Connellan) who took part and shared the $8000 prize money should have to pay a tax penalty for "getting off their backsides and doing something for the Australian tourist industry." Ziggy Bauer, in Melbourne last week, has decided not to enter the argument and make any public comment in case it complicate^^^. problem.
