While Ohakune's fire chief Max Martin, plays the role of a patient with a back injury, volunteer firemen Graham and Alan Murdie slide the scoop stretcher under him from either side. The two halves are then connected at both ends to provide support without having to lift the patient onto the stretcher. The patient can then be carried into a waiting ambulance without danger of suffering further injury.
