REUNION

About 140 ex-Ohakune residents, together with their partners and others still living in Ohakune, met again in Auckland for their two-yearly reunion last weekend. But this time, instead of meeting at a land-based venue as they usually do, they took to the sea in an ex-Devonport ferry — the Kestrel — for an evening of reminiscences about their former home town. This 2-yearly reunion of present and former residents of Ohakune has become something of a tradition over the past 40 years. On this occasion the 200 or so passengers on the Kestrel dined and danced to a 3-piece band for nearly four hours as they were given a tour of Auckland Harbour on a fine, warm, starlit evening and had a grandstand view of the Oriana as she left port.
