Roof gets under way
This roof had to travel an extra lOOkms because it was too wide to pass between the piers of the Makatote Viaduct which crosses SH4 between Horopito and National Park. It was one of two roofs that had to make the trip from Ohakune to Raurimu and both followed the same route. Instead of travelling west along the Tohunga Road to SH4 north of Raetihi and then north to Raurimu, a distance of 40kms (25 miles) it was towed from Ohakune to Waiouru, then up the Desert Road to Rangipo,
then east along SH47 past Lake Rotoaira to National Park and finally onto SH4 to complete the 140km (115 mile trip to Raurimu. There the two roofs were to be re-united with their walls and floors which followed them round later. Prestige Haulage of Te Kuiti were the contractors. The convoy which left Ohakune at 0830 reached Raurimu just over 6 hours later. The two buildings had served their purpose as the old railway social hall at Ohakune Junction.
