• The National Park railway station was broken into during the night of Thursday 17 November. Sometime between 5.30pm Thursday and 8.00am the next morning the station was entered illegally but nothing appears to have been stolen. • In the early hours of Saturday morning 19 November the National Park Volunteer Fire Brigade attended a chimney fire at the home of Mr and Mrs Mike Smith in Buddo Street. The brigade was called out at 7.50am and had the fire under control within minutes. • Residents of the Avonlea Rest Home in Taumarunui were delighted when members of the National Park Country Music Club entertained them for an hour on Thursday 17 November. Guitarists were Bruce and Thomasina. Singers, Murray, Lorraine, Marlene, Lynette and Linda. Supporters, Mary and Bea and Honey from Turangi. Sister Carol thanked the visitors and said "you cannot imagine the joy and pleasure these folks experience from your music, please come again soon!" A return visit is planned for December. • Papakai Pa Committee's annual 'tug-o-war' was held on Saturday 19 November in National Park. Mens — draw between Mt View and Owhango. Owhango retain the "Bowring Transport" trophy. Ladies — final between Mt View and Parks Board. Mt View team won the "Monica Isherwood" trophy. • On Monday 21 November at 3.30pm a freak hail storm hit National Park, lasted for exactly half and hour and left a carpet of hailstones 5 cm deep. • The National Park Cosmopolitan Club which was due to be officially opned last Saturday was broken into on Tuesday night for the third time in the past 4 months. Thieves gained access by forcing a side window and back door.

They took $25 in cash from the pool table, $35 from the till and 292 assorted bottles of beer and spirits with the total value of just over $2000. Detective Sergeant Graham Bell of Taumarunui is heading the enquiry and has some definite leads. • The Rangipo underground power station was officially opened by the Prime Minister on Friday 1 8 November. Attending the ceremony were the Minister of Energy Mr Birch, the Minister of Labour and King Country M.P Mr Bolger, the Secretary of Energy Mr Chesterman and the general manger of the electricity division Mr McCool.
