Rain and wind affect pyrotechnics
Fireworks night on Saturday 5 November was something of a damp squib in the Waimarino as heavy rain and high winds set in for
the evening. Many people wisely decided to postpone Guy Fawkes night by 24 hours judging from the exploding
and cascading skyrockets that appeared in Sunday's night sky. Others too had obviously celebrated Guy Fawkes night earlier in the week judging by the constant sound of exploding fire crackers from dawn until well after dusk from the time the fireworks went on sale. There were few accidents however. In Waiouru a young boy suffered superficial injuries to his hand during the week prior to Guy Fawkes. He was treated by Dr Donovan. Waiouru 's duty doctor over the 'fireworks weekend' Major Louis of the ATG, reported no incident or injury related to fireworks. A 9-year-old Raetihi boy was treated by Ohakune's Dr Perera and admitted to the Waimarino Hospital with minor facial injuries following a fireworksrelated accident on Sunday 6 November. No accidents or injuries were reported from either Ohakune or National Park. The National I?ark bonfire was 'rained out' and will now be lit on the first available fine evening to coincide with a twilight athletics meeting.
