Heading home the hard way

Twenty five men of the Regular Force Cadet Force Schools undertook a 25-mile (40 km) route march from Makaranui (between Raetihi and Ohakune) to Waiouru over Labour Weekend. These men, who were wearingfull battle dress and carrying 50-60 Ib packs containing all their field equipment covered the distance in two days. After marching the first 15 miles they camped overnight near the junction of SH49 with Fields Track at Karioi before completing the final 10 miles the next day. The men who are based at the ATGin Waiouru have since completed a forced route march which was completed in one day and which they found less tiring ' according to Major Seymour who accompanied the cadets.
