Lady bowlers retain Cup

The Ohakune Bowling Club Ladies team easily fought off the first challenge of the season for the prestigious Simonson Cup from the Waverley Club on Thursday 20 October. At Ohakune they won by the handsome margin of ' 27-8. The Ohakune team 'were: Audrey Nation (Skip); Vi Brown (3); Heather Cranston (2) and Betty Hammond (lead). The Ohakune Bowling Club held the Simonson Cup all last season despite several challenges from other ladies teams in the Wanganui area. Last week's game was played on greens that were "quite reasonable"following a tremendous amount of work by club members over the wet winter months, said

spokesman Rita Kaiwhare. After the game the players and guests (including the club's patron Mrs Martin) enjoyed afternoon tea provided by the lady hosts in the recently renovated club rooms. These had been seriously damaged in a fire earlier this year. The club now fiopes to have Stage One of this renovation and decoration work completed in time for the opening day of the new season, next Sunday 6 November. On that day a mixed tournament will be held. Renovation work by volunteer members will continue through the summer season in the hope that Stage 2 will be completed for the beginning of the 1984 winter indoor bowls season.
