GARDENING IN THE WAIMARINO
It is now time to plant flower seedlings, for a show of colour in summer. Here are some suggestions for this: Alyssum, Aster, Sweet Pea, Verbena and Zinnia. There are many more that will also grow here. Perhaps those who live along the main road could also plant for colour to beautify the approaches to the towns. Keep up spraying for weeds where necessary and also keep aphids at bay on roses with spray or rose dust. Generally now that the spring growth is in force it is a matter of going around the garden to tidy up where weeds are prolific and also trimming edges of lawns etc. Flowering shrubs and trees can be pruned at the end of flowering. Mulch shrubberies, rose gardens and perennial borders with compost or peat moss. Gerberas: These can be divided and re-planted. They should be lifted about every 3rd or 4th year and divided into clumps having 3 or 4 'heads' on fans. These plants require perfect drainage but plenty of summer moisture. Plant so that the crown is just level with the soil.
Spring Bulbs: should not be stripped of their foliage when past flowering. Spent heads can be pulled off and leaves can be tied in a knot in bunches to give a tidier appearance. Dahlias: Rooted cuttings may be planted out at the end of October or beginning of November. Old clumps may be lifted, divided and replanted at the same time. Tomatoes: can be planted but the odd frost is always likely in the Waimarino, so it would pay to cover plants at night. Beetroot and Lettuce: may also be planted. Peas: are best planted at 3 week intervals. Parsnips: are now sown and need a fairly rich soil. Potatoes: these can be planted from the end of October up to 1st Decemba^ to avoid late frosts ... "it'^Mp brave gardener who plants them any earlier." Raetihi Garden Club
