Courageous recovery
Nine-year-old Michelle Hansen has proved herself a courageous and capable young girl. In Standard Two at. Raetihi Primary School, she joins in all the physical activities and is coping well with her school work. The difference between Michelle and her classmates is that a year ago she received third degree burns to 75% of her body. Her nightie caught alight when she was watching TV
in front of the fireplace last winter. She spent six months in the Hutt hospital, receiving treatment for burns and having a series of skin graft operations. With the help and support of her family she returned to school this year. Michelle said she enjoys her classes — particularly mathematics. Her mother, Mrs Wendy Hansen, said Michelle will have another major operation at Christmas on her arms and hands.
