Turoa makes new appointment
• AHI Turoa Skifields have nnounced the appointment of Andy Chapman, 27. as public relations manager. He takes over the position vacated by Terrv Drayton who resigned the position of saies and marketing manager last month to start his own ski-related company. Andy has been employed by AHI Turoa since 1979. During -that first season he was one of the nightwatchmen on the skifield. He became a member of the Ski Patrol the following season and in 1982 was
appointed deputy ski patrol leader. Andy, who was born in Hawera, has always been associated with mountains. He learned to climb and ski on Mt Egmont and Whakapapa before the Turoa Skifield opened in 1978. His first experience of Mt Ruapehu was not a happy one ... he and a group of young climbers were caught in 'white-out' conditions in 1972 and had to spend the night on the mountain. With the exception of one overseas trip to America 'in the summer of 1979-80 all his skiing and mountaineering has been done in New Zealand. Andy qualified as a primary school teacher after attending Palmerston North Teachers College but taught for only two years in Taranaki before leaving the teaching profession. He expects his new appointment will involve a lot of travelling and says that he is looking forward to the fresh challenges the new position offers.
