Medieval pageantry re-enacted
A social studies class at Ohakune Frimary School ended in a 'right-royal' battle between pupils of Standards 3 and 4 last Friday week. But it was all part of their studies into medieval history and by acting out the life and times of the Middle Ages the message is reinforced. Despite fierce hand-to-hand combat, none of the armoured knights nor their 'horses'were injured and noone had to be carried off the field of battle. The fact that all the weapons which ranged from swords and lances to pikes and armoured breastplates and visored helmets were
made out of paper and cardboard possibly explains the lack of injury at this colourful battle. The spectacle was witnessed by other pupils at the school. And when the battle and jousting events were over ML combatants adjourned fo^^ friendly feast of barbecued mutton prepared by their teachers Ann Vincent, Gordon Fepere, Gerry Bidwell and John Anwyll. "It was a good lesson t.o end the social studies programme on" said Ann Vincent, ... "the children have been studying medieval history and pageantry for most of the third term and this was the grand finale."
