Missing bicycle mystery solved

Fears that professional bicycle thieves were at work in Ohakune have been discounted by Ohakune police. Dion Wiggins, a 14-year-old Ohakune boy, had his nearly new ten-speed bike stolen on 20 September. The Waimarino Bulletin ran a story on the theft the following week asking anybody who had seen the bike to contact the police. When a Bulletin reporter rang the Ohakune police last week to check on the bike theft he was told that the bike had been returned to Dion and that it appeared he had 'lent it to somebody'. The reporter, amused by the mix-up, rang Dion to

find out what had really happened. Dion said his bike had been stolen but somebody had put it on the police station doorstep the next morning. Confused further by the conflicting stories, the reporter rang the police station again. He was finally told that the bike had been found under a bridge by two young girls who brought it back to the police station. It had been stolen but only for temporary use as it turned out. It seems that the bicycle was not alone in being taken for a ride up the garden path.
