City candidates comments cause concern

At a public meeting held in Wanganui prior to last week's elections, city candidates for the Wanganui Hospital Board were invited to speak briefly on what they had to offer the board. If reported correctly some of their comments and what they see as 'problems' could give Waimarino residents cause for concern. The report said: "The main problem which seemed to concern them was the service Wanganui Base Hospital gave — and whether this was undermined by the number of peripheral hospitals". It went on to say: "The

candidates standing for the first time in the main felt themselves unable to comment on the closing of peripheral hospitals and the effect it would have. Sitting candidates Mrs Noble and Mr Butler said the problem was broad and encompassed more than "how much would be saved." Newly elected Waimarino member of the Wanganui Hospital Board, Dorothy Scarrow was not prepared to comment on this report.at this stage until her appointment was ratified and she had had a chance to verify the report.
