Ohakune Garden Circle News

The highlight of the September meeting of the Ohakune Garden Circle was the presentation . of Life Membership awarded to Mrs E. Martin who has been a member of the Garden Circle for twenty-four years. The presentation was made by the vice-president Mrs B. Barnes who paid tribute to the ever ready help and generosity that Mrs Martin has given the Garden Circle over the years. "There is scarcely a member past or present who is not growing in her garden a plant that originally came from 'Marty's' garden" said Mrs Barnes. Mrs Martin was given a Life Membership certificate and a floral dress spray and received an ovation from the twenty members present. Details of the garden competition being organised

within the borough of Ohakune by the Garden Circle were finalised. It was decided that a suitably inscribed trophy to be held by the winning gardener for one year, and a prize of garden shrubs be donated by the Garden Circle. MrsJ. Warbrickrequested help from the members of the Garden Circle to visit Ruapehu College and advise on the layout of a garden and suitable shrubs to be planted. Mesdames C. Hitchcock, B. Barnes, and J. Murray will visit the college arid discuss plans with the College gardener. Gladioli bulbs will be purchased from club funds for distribution to members at the October meeting. Plants for the saies table donated by Mrs E. Martin, Mrs R. Kaiwhare, Mrs J.

Warbrick and Mrs J. Murray. Members wereable to buy a large range of plants at nominal prices. Competition results Best Tulip: 1st E. Beavis, 2nd E. Samson. Flower of Choice: 1st E. Beavis, 2nd E. Martin. Shrub of Choice: 1st L. McQuarrie, 2nd Miss D. Barnes. Raffle Native plant Corokia J. McFarlane, seeds (Sweetpea) L. McQuarrie. Hostess competition 1st D. Barnes, equal 2nd E. Beavis, Sister Carmel. Fresident's prize for 'Lucky Cup' J. Murray. Garden Circle meetings are held at the home of Mrs B. Barnes in Rangataua Road, Ohakune on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 8pm. New members welcome.
