Police search local rivers

When Waimarino constables" Marty Sutherland and Grey White disturbed two men removing property from Ohakune's Sports Country in the early hours of Saturday 1 October they gave chase but stopped short of entering the swiftly flowing Mangateitei Stream into which the fugitives had run under cover of darkness. As reported in last week's Bulletin one 22-year old Wellington man was subsequently arrested after a police dog handler had been called in from Wanganui. The othe.r man, also from Wellington and known by the nickname 'Spider', was originally thought to have eluded the police. But further police enquiries to try to trace 'Spider' through a tangled web of clues and haunts have drawn

a blank and police are now considering the possibility that he might have slipped and fallen into the swollen river while attempting to cross it. That is why local . constables Marty Suthefland from Ohakune and Kevin Entwistle from Raetihi were joined by Sargeant Grant Goodwin and two other policemen from T aihape in a search along the banks of the Mangateitei Stream and the Mangawhero River down as far as the Makarunui Bridge, last week. It is understood that a . police diving team might be brought in this week to make a more thorough and extensive search of both rivers if the wanted man is not located.
