Ruapehu College wins again

The North Island Secondary Schools Ski championships were held on the Turoa Skifields on Monday and Tuesday of last week. Forty-four schools competed and Ruapehu College won this annual event for the second time in a row. This year they beat Wanganui Collegiate (who wereequal at the end of the first day of competition) into second place by winning all their events in the second day. Ruapehu College ended the 2-day championships with 70 points, Wanganui Collegiate with 62 points and two schools — Palmerston North Girls High School and New Plymouth Girls H igh School — tied for third place with'58 points each. Each school fielded a team of five skiers. The Ruapehu College team included Chris and Shereen Mosaed; Sheree and Tina Drayton and Warren S'cott. The two days on which the championships were held ranged from cold and windy conditions on Monday to brilliantly fine

conditions with hard packed snow and "lots of sunburn" on Tuesday, according to the convenor, Mr Alan Graham of Ohakune. The winning team is awarded the'Skiland'trophy which was originally presented. by the Winchcombe brothers of Ohakune for campetition between Ruapehu and Taihape Colleges. Now that this local competition has developed into a North Island championship, it was agreed that this trophy be used as an award for the top skiing school in the North Island. Other main place getters in the N1 Secondary School Ski Championships were: Rathkeale College, Selwyn College, St Faul's, Taupo Nui A Tia, 56; Auckland Diocesan, Hamilton Boys1 High School, Falmers^l^ North Boys1 High School Cuthbert's, St Kentigern, 54; Green Bay College, Wellington College, Wellington Girls1 College, 52; New Plymouth Bovs1 High School and St Matthews1 College. 50.
