'Ohakune of the past'

Bruce Wilde does not seem to have comprehended that in my letter I was writing about preserving the 'values' of the past — not the dunny cans etc. Values are the ideals and goals upon which our actions and beliefs are based. From the time of the earliest settlement here by the Maori people, each group and each individual has contributed their ideals and their goals to the growth of the complex community which is the present-day Ohakune. Skiing and tourism are now having their turn to contribute and that is what they must do, contribute — not dominate or exploit. Thatiis the decision I want the new Council to make. The goals of the skiing industry can be accommodated but must not be allowed to disadvantage or alienate those with different values for whom Ohakune is home.
