Railway houses

I arn rather perturbed by the Ohakune Borough CounciFs decision to ask the New Zealand Railways to remove the houses in Egmont Street. To my knowledge most of these houses are sound, many freshly painted and most on concrete piles — surely ideal low cost homes for young local families. The shortage of such low cost homes seems to be one of the major problems facing locals. / The Council's main objection to such a scheme seems ludicrous — quote- — "At a later date they may become sub-standard weekend ski chalets". Has the Council decided at this late stage that they want to discourage skiefs from purchasing property in Ohakune? Do they honestly prefer the mushrooming of unimaginative and sometimes downright ugly Aframes? Or are they inferring that all skiers are a dirty slum-abiding lot? One has only to walk around the streets of Ohakune to realise how these skiers and weekenders have restored and repainted their holiday homes. Surely the Council can devise a more constructive use for the perfectly sound properties in Egmont Street.
