"Ohakune of the past..."
Do you remember the trips to Taihape to catch the S'ilver Fern — no dentist in town — monetary contributions to build a doctor's residence and surgery in Raetihi to safeguard the district's ' only G.F. attending to sick kids on the can down the back path - scarey night cart sewage ^Hpiection (thank heaven he had squeakv brakes) - neighbours'effluent appearing in your vege garden -- properties selling for less than Government valuation no lending institutions .prepared to eommit funds to a depressed area for new housing — - nop-existent job opportunities for local kids large numbers of railway families moving away Carters Mill closing with forty men out of work - isolation and insular attitudes worsening - business.es moving away or closing down. What is the 'past' that Judy Doyle is referring to in her letter in last week's ^■tner? JMP'udy Doyle came to Ohakune some 18 months ago to partake in the vibrant, confident and exciting future that the town now has. 1 don't belieye she has any comprehension of the horrors and uncertainties of those dark days of the sixties and early seventies. She says that she will vote for any prospective councillor advocating a return to the 'values' of the past. I will certainly NOT vote for such a candidate. Ohakune's future was totally committed to skiing and tourism in 1952 by the building of the Mountain Road. The likes of such a totally dedicated commitment by a community and district would be hard to find anywhere in New Zealand's history. That is the legacy that has been given to us by the town's . forefathers. Their
commitment has been subsequently carried on by the personal dedication of a handful of people, inspired by the ideals given to them by the men of the Mountain Road Association. We now have an Ohakpne with a future, with opportunities for all those who wish to partake of them. 1 salute and thank all those people who have contributed to the "Ohakune of the future".
