Wake up little town

What is wrong with all you people in this little town of Ohakune and elsewhere in the Ruapehu region? It was August Scene time again recently and I had the pleasure of attending two social functions — the Country and Western Special on Saturday 20 August and Variety Showtime on Wednesday 24 August — both well organised but I was only one of a handful there. Come on people, where is your community spirit? These things are organised for our benefit and entertainment. What is the problem. Is it the venue? . . . or the music? . . . or the atmosphere? Or is it sirnply lethargy! At least there is room to breathe at the Ohakune Chb, not. crammed like sardines as in other venues in the town. A nicely appointed, warmly carpeted lounge, next to the dance floor where one can sit and relax with no pushing or jostling, must surely appeal as an ideal setting for functions such as these. As for the music I realise | some of the music these days may leave a great deal to be desired but 1 believe these functions, and others to come, are planned to satisfy all tastes, right across the board. Regarding the atmosphere, surely that is what you make it. Don't just poke your head in the door and, because you don't see someone you know, offer some weak excuse that you will return later. Come on people, where is that pioneering spirit? According to the chap on the door, this very thing happened many times at both these functions. While this letter may read as though it is aimed at local residents, it also applies to people visiting the area. How often have visitors been heard asking what there is to do in Ohakune? The August Scene Festival, is organised because of the

anticipated influx of visitors, and to provide alternatives to skiing. I look forward to seeing more locals and visitors alike, attending functions that are arranged throughout the year for your entertainment. I congratulate the organisers and committee. A job well done.
