Why not visit a museum these holidays?
For winter visitors to the Waimarino who are looking for something to do when the skifields are closed, a visit to one or all of the three museums in the area could be well worthwhile. Army Museum, Waiouru The QE2 Army Memorial Museum. at Waiouru is a familiar landmark for travellers on SH1 . Its comprehensive display of uniforms, weapons, equipment and photographs has recently been increased as a result of a major extension to the museum area which was officially opened last month. A current exhibition of 220 World War 2 photographs by official photographer Cecil Beaton is on loan from the Imperial War Museum }n London. Open from 9.00am to 4.30pm daily.
Colonial House, Pipiriki This museum and information centre is situated in picturesque Pipiriki on the Wanganui River only 17 miles (27 kms) by road from Raetihi. Its informative displays and photographs tell of the history of the Wanganui River when shallow-draught vessels travelled between Wanganui and Pipiriki. Open on request at this time of the year ... just contact nearby Ranger Station. Waimarino Museum, Raetihi It's varied display of photographs, equipment and artefacts associated with the early Waimarino is housed in what was once the Raetihi railway station. Situated now in Seddon Street it will be opened or request by phoning Raa^B 4247 or 4649.
