Locals 'star' in new film
Pictures' is a film which should have a great deal of local popular appeal when it is screened in Ohakune this week. Among the many 'locals' appearing in the film and mentioned by name in the list of credits are: Matiu Mareikura, Winiata Tapa, Billy Te Hori, Miss Honey Thompson, Miss Maria Toho, Charles Mareikura, John Tuka, Robert Te Huia, Alf Te Koari, Laha Tururangi . . . and others whose names don't feature in the cast. It can be seen at the Kings Theatre in Ohakune tonight (Tuesday) and Wednesday
evening at 7.30pm. The film is set in New Zealand towards the end of the 1 9th Century and is about two brothers, Walter and Alfred Burton, whose photographs of Maoris portrayed very different aspects of colonialism. The Maori scenes were filmed almost entirely in the upper Wanganui River area north of Pipiriki . . . hence the large number of 'local' people who will be recognised in the film. 'Pictures' also portrays, a government surveyor, John Rochfort, after whom Ohakune's Rochfort Park was named.
