Ski Report

• Turoa reports that whilst only 1 cm of snow fell on Wednesday night of last week this was enough to change the texture of the ^^now from 'icy' to 'comfor^Rible skiing conditions.' The base at the top of 'the Giant' chairlift was now 80cm. More snow was expected last Friday night when the 'AU New Zealand Indian Snow-Dance Team' performed their snowmaking rites in Ohakune 'after the pubs close' ! • The new Jumbo T-bar is nearing completion and is expected to be operating this week, possibly only from Tower 6 unless more snow falls in the meantime. • The Turoa Creche is now operating and is something of a 'little winter wonderland' with cut out figures of Walt Disney characters.

Creche director Judy Turner can cater for up to 16 children in the new facility in the new extensions to the Alpine Lodge cafeteria building. • School skiing programmes were not greatly affected by the present lack of snow said Turoa's Mountain manager Robin Foubister. In this 6-week mid-winter season when most transport and skifield facilities would normally be fully utilised by other skiers, the school programmes are usually reduced anyway, he said. • At the time this page went to press last Friday Whakapapa reported that due to lack of snow, only the Valley T-bar was skiable. The first and second chairlifts were operating for access only.
