POLICE FILE
The police presence in the Waimarino is to be increased early next year when a police sergeant is appointed to Ohakune to supervise the operations of the Ohakune, Raetihi and National Park police stations. This was announced by District Commander, Superintendent B.K. Dean, from Wanganui last week. The police sergeant would not be appointed until he could take up residence in Ohakune and that won't be "until the weather fines up" so that the surplus police house in Raetihi can be uplifted and re-located in Ohakune, said Superintendent Dean. The house will be located on police property near the existing police station. The Waimarino will then have a total of 6 policemen — two in National Park, one in Raetihi and three (2 constables and a sergeant) in Ohakune. Raetihi Police Station Superintendent Dean also said that "at about the same time" the old Raetihi Courthouse which now serves as
the police station will be disposed of and replaced by a more modern, free standing building better suited for the purpose. The old courthouse building — which is almost identical to the present Ohakune Courthouse — will be put up for tender for removal or demolition but it is believed that the Waimarino Museum Society may be interested providing the terms are favourable. Negotiations are under way. Ohakune appointment Ohakune is again to have a permanent second police constable this week. He is Constable Brian Wilson from Pukekohe who will be taking up his new appointment tomorrow, 3 August, said Senior Sergeant Graeme Faulkner from Taihape last week. Constable Brian Wilson replaces Constable John McCartney who transfern^^ to Napier recently. In the meantime Constable Steven Webber from Wanganui has been filling the temporary vacancy.
