TUROA REPORT
Turoa enjoyed what can only be described as a 'fantastic' week of skiing last week with six consecutive days of fine weather and about 1000 skiers a day taking full advantage of the conditions. Ski Academy Terry Drayton, Turoa Skifields saies manager, reported that those people taking the Ski Academy last week were particularly lucky to have such a prolonged spell of clear sunny days for their 5-day course. Terry said that all the Ski Academies through to the end of September were now fully booked but there were still vacancies on the two adult academies scheduled for October. Jumbo T-Bar The ten replacement towers for the new Pomagalski 'Jumbo' T-bar, have been replaced. Originally from Christchurch the first set of towers collapsed two monJgks ago under a combina^Pon of snow and ice while they were being installed. The replacement towers were fabricated by local engineers, Graham Dixon Ltd of Burns Street, Ohakune, and taken up to the top of the Mountain Road early last week. From there they were lifted by helicopter onto the skifield and installed on the original concrete bases. The Jumbo T-bar is now expected to be operational later this week or early next week. Ski hire Turoa Skifields are now offering a limited ski-hire facility at the top of the Mountain Road for those ^K)ple who have driven up not to ski but to have a
look — and then decided to 'give it a go'. Rather than having to drive all the way down to Ohakune to hire skis and then drive back again, this new facility is being made available. But, although there will be a reasonable crosssection of skis available the numbers (about 100 sets) will be limited and people are advised to hire their skis and boots in town if they want to be sure of getting gear to fit. The advantage of having a ski hire and repair facility at the base of the skifield is that all skis — hired or privately owned — can be serviced on the spot, said Terry Drayton. Creche The Turoa Skifield creche is due to open in the Alpine Lodge cafeteria building at the top of the Mountain Road, this week.
