Waiouru Polar Bears Amateur Swimming Club
Swimmathan for Telethon Twenty three youngsters from Waiouru Primary School and Ruapehu College participated in a belated swimmathon at Burns Pool, Waiouru Camp. It had been hoped that the pool — closed for annual maintenance — would be ready in time for the swimmathon on Telethon Sunday but the work was not finished. Instead the children swam on the following Wednesday between 5-8pm. With good parent support, the 23 children in total swam: 1488 lengths, (ap-
prox. 49,517 metres) for a pledged total of $770.95. Those who participated ranged from proficient swimmers to younger members who displayed their determination. Eight children swam 100 or more lengths of the pool. Undoubtedly some children surpassed all expectations, as they had been unable to swim since the end of the May holidays. "It was a great effort and we are very proud of them" said Mrs Shirley Grant q the Waiouru AmatA Swimming Club.
