Raetihi wants to retain identity

Raetihi telephone subscribers will be listed under an Ohakune prefix when the automatic exchange comes into operation — possibly early next year — unless the council's recommendation to the Postmaster General

to have Ohakune and Raetihi numbers listed under a Waimarino prefix is adopted. The present plan is to have Ohakune numbers prefixed with 58 and Raetihi with 54 but both these will be listed under OKN and both will have the same STD 3-digit call sign when subscriber toll dialling comes into operation. "I can sympathise with the people of Raetihi but it is happening all over the country" said Ohakune

Postmaster Sam Swarbrick, who pointed out that Upper Hutt, which is 22 miles from Wellington and used to have its own prefix, is now listed under Wellington as part of the STD rationalisation process. Raetihi councillors expressed their concern that when the Ohakune exchange goes automatic the name 'Raetihi' would disappear altogether from the telephone directory.
