Dogs Kill Sheep

This was the sight that greeted Constable Brian Foote of Waiouru one morning recently when two German Shepherd dogs got into a paddock adjoining the police houses and mauled his small flock of six 'pet' sheep. He had had the sheep — three ewes, two wethers and a ram for about two years since they were lambs. Now he has only one wether left. The dogs killed two of the sheep outright and so severely mauled three others that they had to be destroyed. The attack occurred in the early hours of the morning and both Waiouru constables, Brian Foote and Dave Glendinning gave chase armed with a rifle and a shotgun. One of the dogs was shot but the other got away" though they think they know the identity of the dog concerned and will be keeping a close eye on it in future. Both policemen have dogs of their own as pets and hated havirig to take such action but it is not the first time sheep-worrying has occurred in Waiouru and similar action would be

taken again if necessary. They advised owners of dogs to take better care of their dogs, supervise them adequately and see that they were properly exercised and fed to avoid a repetition of a similar incident and fate.
