Why not visit a local museum this weekend?
There are three museums within the Waimarino Bulletin's circulation area. Why not visit one (or all) of them this holiday weekend and learn something of our local and national history.
COLONIAL HOUSE MUSEUM, PIPIRIKI This museum and information centre is situated in picturesque Pipiriki on the Wanganui River only 17 miles (27km) by road from Raetihi. The Colonial House is one of the original European style houses in Pipiriki and has been restored, together with its garden and orchard, in a style characteristic of the colonial era. Its informative displays and photographs tell of the history and the current use of the Wanganui River. Open from 10-4pm during winter, 9-5pm in summer. WAIMARINO MUSEUM, RAETIHI The new Waimarino Museum in Seddon Street, Raetihi, is housed in the former Raetihi Railway Station. It has a varied display
of photographs, equipment and other artefacts associated with the early Waimarino. Normally open on Sundays only from 2-4pm, it will be opened on request by phoning Raetihi 4247 or 4649.
ARMY MUSEUM, WAIOURU The QE2 Army Memorial Museum on State Highway One is a familiar landmark in Waiouru. It has a comprehensive display associated with the history of the New Zealand Army including its uniforms, equipment and major campaigns etc. Some of the static displays are full size mock-ups of battle scenes with audio visual support. The Museum is open from 10am-4pm daily throughout the year.
