ARATAPU NOTES.
A meeting-of ladies was held one day this week in order to push on the effort being made for the raising of funds for the improvement of the Aratapu Domain reserve. There was a good attendance an 3 "good enthusiasm. It was decide] i> form a working bee to meet regula iy for the purpose of preparing articles for the gift auction, A variety of attractions was also s decided upon for Sale d-iV in order to fill in the day’s amu ements, amongst them being a Trilby Show, a Christmas tree, shooting ga'lery, etc. The Committee ask the assistance of all ladies towards the object, in vijvv Subscription lists are to be prepared and a determined effort made to raise sufficient means to do the work well. Jk, probib t on meeting was held in the Hud on Monday evening, when there va-, a full meeting of ladies and gentlemen and young ones. The programme contained some good songs and recitations j and some j toiling addresses on p ohibition. Mr T» Webb gave the opening add-nss and was followed by Mr G. idllott on the economic aspect of the question. Rev. S» J. Gibson was the third speaker ; he spoke on the aims of prohibitionists generally and carried his audience with him from g ave to gav, • The hymn ‘Strike out the top line’ was sung, and a large calico poster illustrative of the prohibitionist’s way of of voting was displayed on the stage. The meeting was altogether a good and effective one. It was preceded by an open air meeting which was we.l attended. The Orangemen held their annual ball on Friday evening, but there was only a small attendance compared with these gatherings iu former years Those who were present had all the advantages of good music, good catering and plenty of room. Mr A. Friend, secretary to the Kauri Timber Company, arrived here late on Tuesday evening in the ss. Kopuru ; he is accompanied by his wife The Hon E. Mitclielson was also a passenger by the Kopuru Mr Friend holds a power of attorney for the Kauri Timber Company, and was able to exercise the Company’s votes at the County elections M's Kenner and child managed to fall in'o the creek on Wednesday while attempting to get into a boat, and might have been drown -d bad they not been promptly assisted by a man who was engaged on a raft in the neighbourhood of the mishap.
