A Prohibition Convention held at the close of a successful mission at Gisborne, by the Bev. L. M. Isitt. decided on a vigorous campaign in that district. James Hawthorn, living i» Carleton Gore Boad, Mount Eden, was found dead in his house on Friday with a revolver by his side and a bullet hole through his head. The Auckland Committee do not feel disposed to send their Wairarapa .Belief funds to Wellington as a centre. It is considered that either Auckland or Dunedin has a better claim to act as the distributing centre. The City Council have now agreed to move towards the seouting of 20 acres or more of Freeman’s Bay reclamation for a recreation ground. A Committe has been appointed to confer with the Harbour Board on the matter. The Annual District Synod of the Wesleyan Church has been sitting in Pitt Street school room. From reports made it is evident that the affairs of the church are making good progress in spite of monetary tightness. Bev. Joseph Blight preached in Pitt Street Church last Sunday. James Hawthorn, keeper of the Mount Eden Powder Magazine, eommitted suicide on Friday last by shooting himself. At the inquest the act was shown to have been deliberately planned, and the man to have been quite sane, lout the verdict returned was suicide while temporarily insane.
