CRICKET

An interesting cricket match between teams selected by W. Smith and T. Elliott took place in Mr Langford’s paddock, Tatarariki, on Xtnas day. The latter’s team batted first ! and made 54 of which Elliott made 33 carrying out his bat. Smith’9 side replied with 97. C. H. Matthews 35, H. Fowler 21, J. Davern 11, and W. Smith 10, reaching double fi»u es. W Smith secured 2 wickets for 8 runs, II Legge 3 for 19 and A. W. Legge 4 for 27. For the losing team Elliott obtained 7 for 44 and F. Matthews 4 for 33 The Albertland Cricketers have intimated their intention of visiting this district about January 13th to play a match with the Tatarariki Cricket Club.

There is no Cup fixture for tomorrow, but on the 6th instant the Tatarariki II and the Aratapa II teams meet on the latter’s ground.

Now that the Australian Cricketers who visited England last season have returned home the public have learned the cause of tbeir want of success. It appears that several members of the team so far forgot themselves and their country that they gave themselves up to drunkenness and violence and would not be controlled. Walter Giffen and Coningham never drank a drop daring the tour. An enquiry will probably be held by the Australasian Cricket Council.
