OUR OWN LAND.

No less than 532 passengers for New Zealand will arrive here from Sydney by the steamers Tasmania and Rotomahana on Sun day.

The Auckland Board of Education have another enquiry of considerable gravity on hand. The charges which, are made by Mr Johnson Selby, first assistant ©f the Devonport School, against Mr Alfred Benge, headmaster of the same, amount to an accusation of cheating at the Standard examination with intent to deceive the Inspector, Mr Crowe. At the opening of the enquiry on Saturday last, Mr Thomas Cotter, solicitor, appeared for Mr Benge and the further hearing of the charges was adjourned to Wednesday to enable Mr Selby to retain and instruct counsel. The enquiry has been now further adjourned to January 25th owing to the illness of Mr Benge. Mr Jackson Palmer evidently finds his position el defeated candidate an unpleasant one, and does not know how to take a beating. As a result of inquiries and investigation in the Waitemata election, a petition is to be lodged by Mr Jackson Palmer against the return of Mr R. Monk as a member of Parliament on the ground of alleged brioery and corruption. Mr P. E. Ba,nine has been engaged by Mr Palmer and Messrs Devore and Cooper will act for Mr Monk Those acquainted with the character of the two men, and who know the general tone in which the election was fought will feel surprised at the attempt now being made ; for whatever the result of the present petition, it is generally considered that a little stirring of the other pot will show it to be much blacker than the one now aimed at.
