THE MAORI ELECTIONS.

The results of the polls taken for the return of four Maori members to Parliament give three supporters to the present Government and one to the Opposition. THE NORTHERN DISTRICT has returned Hone Heke, a new member, ■who is only 26 years of age and is therefore the youngest of the members of the new Parliament. He is a grandson of the celebrated Ngapnhi chief, of the same name, who fought against the British troops in 1844—45. He speaks English well and was educated at St. Stephen’s Native School, Parnell- Until recently he held a position in the civil service in Wellington. THE WESTERN‘'DISTRICT has elected Pepene Eketone, a man of about 33 years of age, a chief of the Ngatimaniapoto tribe. He is an assessor of the Native Land Court and was educated at the Three Kings Wesley College. THE EASTERN DISTRICT has returned Wi Pere by a very substantial majority. He is a supporter of the Opposition and was brought prominently before publie in connection with Mr Rees attempt t© open up the lands on the East Coast.

THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT has re-elected Tame Parata, a strong Government supporter. The latest returns have given Te A© the seat for the Western District.
