On Saturday afternoon the Aratapu and Mangawhare juniors met for the first time. The game, which resulted in a close finish, was played at Mangawhare. Aratapu batted first and Corkill and Butland both made a good stand, the former playing a very careful innings. Elliott placed his case in the hands of his solicitor and was advised to retire. The second wicket fell when the score had reached 29 and the innings closed with the total at 55 runs- A. McLean’s bowlingCoverage was very good as may be seen below. Mangawhare lest Young’s services in Lowrie’s first over and then settled down to very steady play ; fifteen overs (ten maidens) were bcwled before the next wicket fell with the score at 12. A. McLean was the only one to make a stand and when nine wickets had fallen for 32 runs the game looked a certainty for Aratapu. J. Stansfield the last man made things a bit livelier and 16 runs were added in six ©vers sc that only six more were wanted to make a draw- Elliott then very wisely changed the bowling, which should have been done before, and off Rutland's first ball Stansfield was well caught by Bonella and victory remained with Aratapu.
