ELECTION RESULTS.
The interest taken in the General elections now past was very keen in all the electorates, and the results were eagerly looked for. An anxious but very orderly crowd waited round our office till two o’clock in the morning to bear all the news that arrived at the earliest moment. The first returns that came to hand of the Bay election were those of the Mongonui district and Kawakawa and Mr Houston at once took up a good lead, which was, however, at one time reduced to 25, and Trounsonites’ hopes ran high, but later returns slowly increased Mr Houston’s majority, and the last batch to arrive gave him a certainty of election.
Bay of Islands. The result of this election shows the folly of Mr Dargaville’s stand. But for the block votes received by Mr Houston in his own neighbourhood, the contest between him and Mr Trounson has been very even. Trounson Houston Dargaville
The full returns show that Mr Houston has been {returned by a majority of 232, the numbers being: Houston 1431; Trounson 1199; Dargaville 399 ; out of 4916 electors on roll. Marsden. The anticipations expressed by Mr Harrison during the contest have not been realised and Mr Thompson secured majorities in most of the centres; Waipu, Wan gar ei and Kamo gave him large majorities. The 4 Dunedin Star,’ in an editorial, regrets Mr Rolleston’s exclusion as one of the few men who could claim to be a politician of high principle, culture and ripe‘ experience, and who fas been a credit to the Legislative empire. Richardson’s and Mackenzie’s exclusion is regarded as temporary. While the Ministers have received a triuranh at the majority ©f the polls, their position is by no means assured. The coalition of prohibitionists with the Labour Party, which swept the Dunedin Suburbs, is distinctly ominous that Sir Robert Stout will command a majority. His views on the liquor question repeal, and bis acceptance by the country are signs of the time which point to a reorganisation of the party under Sir Robert Stout’s leadership. The results at Auckland and Wellington clearly indicate that the tide is turning. SIR ROBERT STOUT. [HIS VIEWS CN THE SITUATION. A GREAT LIBERAL VICTORY. Sir Robert Stout says his prediction has been verified that women support the Democracy, and will uphold national education, and, where direct veto has been made an issue and won, it has been by the influence of women. He declares that tnoi-e than half the Liberal party in the new Parliament are direct vetoists, and that this frees the party from the taint of the liquor ring, and the Government must fa,ll in line accordingly. Personally he regrets the defeat of several old Parliamentarians, butjaelievesjthe present House equal in character and capacity to the last Parliament. He makes the Liberal party 52, of whom 22 are in favour of the Liquor Bill and 30 direct veto. He makes the Opposition IS, of whom some are veto. The liquor party are downcast and discomfoited.
