What good has the exU'a $300,000 odd put on in the Customs tariff done the Colony? He thought that they should go into the matter gradually, and start at first by, probably, reeproeal duties. I-Ie spoke of the effect of high protective tariffs in Victoria and Amerira, and especially of the result of the Sherman Silver Act in the United States. One by one these artificial attempts of this sort were proving failures. The Auckland Agricultural Show which promised to be the most successful held for many years was very much interfered with by the weather, which put quite a damper over it. The Association expect a deficit of S3OO. A man named A. P. Kingboru, an inmate of the Costley Home for some three years and a half, has lately come into £IOO 14s 3d. Very naturally the Charitable Aid Board desired to be paid for the man’s maintenance but this the man refused to do. The matter came before the R.M Court where the man urged that as he had been working in the Home it would be unfair ti compel him to pay for his maintenance. The Resident Magistrate, however, considered that his labour was not worth much or he would not be destitute, and made an order for £64 to be paid to the Board, and the remainder to bp ap? plied tp tup man’s future uuumptmnce,
