PAPAROA.
[from our own correspondent]
The members of the Mutual Improvement Association, on September 6th, listened, to an excellent paper on ‘ Women’s Progress, by Miss P. Hames. The essay gave evidence of much time and care, and was much appreciated by the members. There was an attendance of forty members and visitors. On October 4th we are to have a debate on the subject ‘ Is the granting of the franchise to women likely to benefit the State ?’ Ilev. Mr Mather taking the affirmative and Mr T. Wilson the negative. When the subject of exempting improvements from taxation in connection with local bodies, was under the notice of the local Liberal Association, a letter was received on the subject from Mr E. Thompson M.H.E., saying that he also was in favour of exempting improvements, and hoped to see the law amended in that respect. When the EatingAmendment Bill came before the House, Mr Thompson expressed his opinion that ‘ the whole Bill was not worth wasting five minutes on.’ This seems rather inconsistent conduct. What does our ‘ independent ’ member mean i' The preliminary posters of the North Kaipara Agricultural Show are now issued, and are obtainable from the Secretary. What are our friends of the Paparoa branch of tire National Association about ? They hare apt had a meeting since the session of
Parliament commenced. One of the members informs me that they are always at work, but what they are at work at, dees not appear. Now National Ass., prick up your ears ! I bear that Mr Monk who last summer was round as one of the delegates from the above Association, which is working in opposition to the present Government, is now a candidate for Waitemata. He has I believe quite changed his tactics, and now speaks in support of the present Ministry ! Consistent man : I have this on the authority of a gentleman who heard Mr Monk’s recentaddress at Pahi. Onr Brass Band on Thursday last: paid a visit to Tanea. fulfilling an engagement to plav at a gathering- of the Maories there. The Tanoa natives have started, I understand, two Brass Bands, having expended £l3O on instruments. They do not evidently intend to be left behind.
