WHANGAREI NOTES.

Mr James Harrison of Whangarei will be a candidate for Marsden at the next general election. Mr Harrison has been in business as a general storekeeper at Whangarei for about 20 years, and is well acquainted with the requirements of the electorate. He has been a member at various times of several local bodies, such as Town Board, School Committee, and Licensing Commissioners, being also chairman of the last-named board. He was also chairman of the Northern Bailway League, formed for the promotion of the railway northward from Auckland. Mr Harrison holds advanced Liberal views, takes a lively interest in religious matters, and is a strong advocate of temperance. He will shortly make known his views through the press and the platform. Measles are still very prevalent, the school having been closed now for nearly two months. The ‘ Northern Advocate ’ is now issued from its new printing office, which is a handsome two-storey building ; the machinery will be run by a steam engine. Mr Elliott (formerly sheep inspector) who has been laid up for about a month from being seriously injured by a fad from his horse, is now progressing favourably. The s.s. Ethel which runs weekly from Dargaville to Tangiteroria is much appreciated not only by the up-river settlers, but also by travellers between this place and the Northern Wairoa.
