We hoped to have surprised our readers this week with our new supplement making the Bell eight columns larger, but, though advised for this week, they have not yet reached us. The barques Northern Chief and Devon, port are both to load timber at the Kaipara for Sydney. A Benefit Concert is to be given in the Arapohue Public Hall on Friday next See Arapohue notes. The barque Grasmere is now on her way from Auckland to Kaipara to load 350,000 feet of sawn timber at the Kauri Company’s mills. Mr F. J. Dargavillo is to be a candidate for the Bay of Islands seat, and his candidatinc “ is being well received by the p üblic everywhere,” so saitb his father. Pull his other leg somebody. The Mascotte Company are to reproduce ‘ Satanella ’ in the Kopuru Hall on Friday next. See their advertisement on page 2.
Mr J. M. Dargaville has announced himself as a candidate for the Eden district at general elections. This electorate includes the whole of the district from Parnell to the Manukau, and also the whole of Devonpcrt and adjacent districts up t© Birkenhead.
A Fancy Dress Carnival was held in the Dargaville Rink on Wednesday when there was large attendance, including about thirty from down river. The prizes were distributed as follows, —Ladies; Best dressed, Miss McDowell; Most graceful, Miss M. Dargaville. Most ridiculous, and also fastest, Miss Morgan. Gentlemen ; Most ridiculous, Mr W. Yeale ; Best dressed, Mr Harkness ; Most graceful, Mr J. Raynes; Fastest, Mr A. McLean.
The Good Templars occupied the Aratapu Band of Hope platform last Tuesday ovenin", Mr H.JC. Searle in the chair. A fairly good programme was presented, but the conduct of some ill bred animals at the back was very annoying to the large number ©f respectable people present. Such disgraceful conduct calls for police interference.
Mr T. C. French who is well and favorably known in these parts left on Wednesday morning for another position in the Kauri Company’s employ. Mr French was an enthusiastic cricketer, and took a great interest in all sports ; in local entertainments he was also a frequent performer, always giving his services willingly. He was a member of the Wesleyan choir, and up to within a few months back was Secretary to the Aratapu Band of Hope, which position he held for nearly two years. On Tuesday evening he was enthusiastically tenderedthe thanks of that society for the many services he ha I rendered. Mr French leaves many friends behind him who wishjhim well,and will be glad to hear of his success in the future.
