Deceased had been la d p for a long time and passed away quietly in his brother’s house some 18 miles above Kaihu. We are crippled this week by an attack of measles on two of our staff, and it is only with extraordinary effort that we have been able to accomplish as much as wo have. We crave the indulgence of our friends for any shortcomings or delays that may have occurred. The County stone-breaker was put on trial yesterday, being driven by Mr E. Thompson’s engine. Some twelve cubic yards of metal were successfully broken ia three hours. Unfortunately the CouDty Engineer is laid up with the measles aud was unable to be present. The quarterly meeting of the local Wesleyan Circuit was held at Aratapu on Wednesday, last week. There was a good representative attendance from different parts and the financial reports were fairly satisfactory. With the exception of Mangawhare the different churches showed increases in contributions, the advance of Arapohue being the most marked. A Maori named Matui Puhipi was arrested in Auckland, on Saturday, by Chief Detectiv Grace upon the charge of having on the 12th December stolen a watch and chain, greenstone pendant, suit of clothes, blankets and a pair of boots, value £7 ss, the property of a native named Hepe, who resides at Babylon. The accused appeared before the Police Court, Auckland and was remanded to appear at Dargaville, Bernard’s Japanese Troupe played at Te Kopuru on Monday, at Aratapu on Tuesday and Wednesday and at Dargaville last night. The programme is • varied and a somewhat remarkable one; the dogs and monkey are well trained and clever, but the Japanese with their contortions and balancing are the chief attractions. Many things done by them are both new and surprising to those in this part of the globe.
