The Aratapu mill is working an hour overtime daily ; the barque Examiner is hourly expected to arrive. Mr H. Hammond has disposed of N. E. pt. Section 36, Ivopuru to Mr Henry Spurr, An inquest is being held at Daigaville to-day on the body of a man named Me Gregor found dead yesterday. Mr Edward Hope, dental surgeon, will be in this district from Juniy 7th and will be glad to see all those requiring his services See advertisement. We would like to have had something to say in reference to the Gumfields’ Commission, but must defer it this week. We have given our readers a pretty full account of its sittings in this district as the matter is of more interest to this County than any other. Many parts of the evidence will be found very interesting reading. Several reports have reached us of thefts by a little girl iu Aratapu, and it is said by some that the parents know of and encourage the pilferings. We cannot vouch for the latter hut it is a sad fact that a little girl of tender years has been seen stealing fruit and the like from one of the

shops. It might be advisable for the police to caution the parents if such has not already been done. Mr Bernard’s Japanese Troupe is announced to play in the different centres of this district. The combination possesses some extraordinary features, including dogs and monkeys that can do almost anything but speak. Little Ethel the wonderful contortionist, the Japanese members whose wonderful ladder act and contortions have astonished thousands, and not least Madame Bernard whose serio-comic songs and dances are in themselves a great attraction. The Troupe occupied the Auckland City Hall for many nights in succession and are visiting the country simply to tide over the winter season. We have much pleasure in calling attention to Messrs Smith and Canghey’s new advertisement which appears this week. Also to Mr J. Lambert’s announcement. Our roads are slowly improving and during the last few years vehicles of various kinds have materially increased in number, Mr Lambert is a tradesman of .long experience and the successful character of his past efforts must commend him to new customers. Look him up as you pass through Helensville.

A painful accident happened to Mr Alfred Smith, son of Mr A. P. Smith, at Aratapu yesterday. He was hammering some brass when a piece flew off and striking the wall bounded back and hit him in the eye. The eyeball is very much injured and the sight almost certainly destroyed. The piece of brass penetrated deeply and Dr. Norton recommended his immediate removal to Auckland for special treatment. Much sympathy is felt for the sufferer and it is sinceiely hoped he may come out of his trouble without very serious consequences.
