MAUNGATUROTO.

(From our own Correspondent). On Tuesday evening last the Rev. J. Hazeldine, gave a lecture in the Hall on «The Life of Christ,’ preceeded by a short story entitled ‘ Enoch Arden.’ The magic Lantern views'which the Rev. gentleman gave by way of illustration to both were certainly very good and served to make the lecture very interesting. There was a good number present; and judging by the silence maintained dining the lecture, I should say it was appreciated. I understand that the County Council at their last meeting decided to take the new road line running past Mr Cullen’s store as it was considered to be the cheapest and best road. This business has certainly been a storm in a teapot, but I think it has ended up the right way at last, although it has caused a number of the ratepayers considerable ti'puble as also tb© Council and what

is more waste of money in engineering when onr roads need every penny the Council has ' r c i'ir disposal. Yt-s, erday (Thursday) we were visited by one of the heaviest storms and floods that it has been my lotto experience. Ido not remember the floods ever being so high in this district since eighty-four. Yesterday we had a rainfall of seven inches in a few hours. In passing through to Waipu last week I noticed that the gorge road is being put in good order, but not before it was needed as some of the bridges were getting very shaky indeed.
