To begin with there is the oily one, the one who wants to shake hands with you, even if you are digging gum in the field and your fingers are muddy. And then there is the stiff and dignified patriot who has money and is very respectable, who goes home and comes back again, and builds mills and factories and grinds meal and men andtliings. There is also the syndicate patriot who opens up the country and buys up shares and cuts down wages and encourages immigration, who talks about silken cords to tie us to the old country and whipcords to tie our noses to the grindstone. There are a great many more varieties. We have met them all, but very rarely Dr. Johnson’s variety—‘A man who loves his country.’— Worker.
